How to Check a Health Website Before You Rely on It

A health website can help you prepare for an appointment, understand unfamiliar terms, or find a service. But a polished design does not tell you who wrote the material, when it was reviewed, or whether it applies to your situation. A few minutes of checking can help you decide how to use a page: as background reading, as a prompt for questions, or not at all.

Start with the source itself. For example, when you encounter a site such as https://www.uicmgh.net/, look for an About page, named authors, contact details, and a clear explanation of the organization behind it. The domain name alone cannot establish who runs a website or whether its health information has been reviewed.

Find out who is responsible

Reliable health information should make its ownership easy to understand. A hospital, public agency, university, professional association, or named publisher may provide useful material, but the label is only a starting point. Check whether the page identifies an author or clinical reviewer and explains their relevant qualifications.

Look for a way to contact the organization, too. A working address or phone number does not prove that every claim is accurate, but an anonymous page with no accountable publisher gives you less reason to trust it. If the site sells a product or service, note that interest while reading. Commercial ties do not automatically make information wrong, but they may shape what the page emphasizes.

Check the page, not only the website

A site may publish both carefully reviewed guidance and pages that are old, brief, or aimed at a different audience. Find the publication or review date on the specific page you plan to use. Health advice can change as evidence and clinical practice develop. If no date appears, search the page for links to current guidelines or references, and consider asking a qualified professional whether the information is still relevant.

Read beyond the headline. A headline may promise a simple answer, while the body explains limits, risks, and exceptions. Check whether the page distinguishes general education from personal medical advice. Be cautious when a page presents one treatment as right for everyone or encourages readers to stop a prescribed treatment without speaking to their clinician.

Look for evidence and balance

Good health writing usually tells readers how it reached its conclusions. It may cite research, clinical guidelines, or public health agencies and make those references easy to locate. A long reference list is not enough on its own: check whether the cited sources support the specific claim, and whether the page has fairly described uncertainty.

Notice how the page handles benefits and harms. A treatment discussion that lists possible gains but says little about side effects, costs, or alternatives may leave out information you need for a conversation with a clinician. Pages about symptoms should also explain when to seek prompt care, rather than treating a search result as a diagnosis.

Use a short review routine

Before relying on an online health page, pause and check a few concrete details. This routine is useful when you are reading on a phone or comparing several sources, and it can help you bring better questions to an appointment.

  • Identify the organization that publishes the page and how to contact it.
  • Look for a named author or reviewer and relevant qualifications.
  • Check when the page was published or last reviewed.
  • Open the references and see whether they support the main claims.
  • Look for discussion of risks, alternatives, and limits to the advice.
  • Confirm that the page is meant for people in your situation and location.

Turn reading into a useful conversation

Online information works best as preparation, not as a substitute for care tailored to you. Save the page title and note the claim that raised a question. Bring that detail to a clinician, pharmacist, or other qualified professional, along with relevant facts such as your medications, allergies, and symptoms. They can help you interpret whether the information applies to your circumstances.

If two credible sources disagree, avoid choosing the answer that sounds most certain. Differences may reflect new evidence, different patient groups, or local guidance. Ask which source is current and which recommendation fits your situation. That small step turns web browsing into a more focused conversation and reduces the chance that a confident-sounding page will carry more weight than it deserves.
